Dear Anon,
1. Yes, it is good feng shui to have the kitchen share an external wall.
2. It can be the wash basin.
3. `Rooms' that do not share an external wall would imply that they are somewhere in the interior of the house (not necessary centrepoint) but somewhere in the `interior'.
This applies to other `four walled' rooms such as a bedroom.
